Tasty tips for grilling salmon

Salmon is the perfect grilling fish because it's so versatile… not to mention packed with healthy Omega-3 oils and good-for-you protein. If that weren't reason enough to persuade you to pick up some salmon for your next barbecue session, here are a few great grilled salmon recipes to get you started.

Grilled Salmon Recipes

Barbecued salmon recipes aren't hard to find. In fact, if you ask any barbecue enthusiast they're sure to have at least one great suggestion. Here are some of our favorite easy BBQ salmon recipe tricks:

  • Sweet chili cumin rub: Combine a tablespoon of cumin, 1/3 cup of brown sugar and 1/3 cup of chili powder to create a rub. Lightly oil the salmon filets or steaks and pat mixture onto both sides. Let sit for 20-30 minutes before grilling.
  • Soy sauce and brown sugar: Combine 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp lemon pepper, 1/3 cup soy sauce and ⅓1/3 cup water in a sealable plastic bag. Insert salmon and turn to coat. Let sit for at least two hours in the refrigerator.

Before you dive into preparing the items for your salmon recipes, remember that great barbecue salmon recipes all start with the right grilling conditions. Be sure to let your salmon reach room temperature before grilling; then, lightly oil the grill rack and warm the barbecue to medium heat. If you're doing a whole salmon, be sure to make a couple of cuts on each side to ensure even cooking, and keep it away from open flames; barbecue pits are not recommended for salmon, since the free-flaming fire can sear the meat.

Grilled Salmon Marinade Recipes

Some grilled salmon recipes call for rubs and sauces while others call for marinades. The best thing about a marinade is that it gives the fish an opportunity to really soak in the flavor, which steams into the flesh at grill time. A few tips on marinating salmon:

  • Use liquids like lemon juice, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, white wine, maple syrup, soy sauce and chicken broth
  • Use herbs like dill, thyme, salt and pepper, ginger, garlic, chili and brown sugar

Your best bet when experimenting with grilled salmon marinade recipes is to mix and match your favorite flavors. Try combining dill, lemon and pepper, chili and brown sugar or maple syrup and soy sauce for a teriyaki flavor.

Now that you have some basic barbecue salmon ideas, hit the market for a fabulous piece of fish and the ingredients you'll need to experiment with the flavors that intrigue you.
